Deforestation in the hills outside of Kachere. Malawians deforest hillsides to plant crops, mostly sorghum for making beer. The way that they cut down the trees and burn the land means that all of the good soil runs off during the rainy season ensuring that the land is only good for one season of growng. The next year they will have to move somewhere else. As they continue to cut down trees, Malawi suffers from prolonged dry seasons which are terrible for all crops.
